When you get approved for a new credit card, waiting 7–10 days for the physical card can slow down your minimum spend. Some banks now give you an instant card number or let you add the card to a digital wallet right away, so you can start using it the same day.
Here’s a simple breakdown of how each bank handles instant access.
American Express
- Instant Number: Yes
- Eligible Cards: Almost all personal and business cards (Platinum, Gold, Green, Delta, Hilton, Marriott, Blue Business Plus, etc.)
- How it works: Amex is the most consistent. Right after approval, the full 16‑digit number, expiration date, and CVV usually appear on your screen.
- Tip: Screenshot the number immediately. If you close the window, you normally can’t pull the full number again until the physical card arrives.
Chase
- Instant Number: No (with one small exception)
- Digital Wallet Access: Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Reserve, Freedom Flex, Freedom Unlimited, Ink Business cards
- How it works: Chase doesn’t give you a raw card number. But once approved, you can open the Chase app and tap “Add to Digital Wallet” to load the card into Apple Pay or Google Pay instantly.
- Exception: The Chase Amazon Prime card is automatically added to your Amazon account for immediate use.
Capital One
- Instant Number: Yes (virtual number)
- Eligible Cards: Venture X, Venture, SavorOne, Quicksilver, Spark Business
- How it works: After approval, you can log into the Capital One app or website and generate a virtual card number right away. Works for online purchases immediately.
Citi
- Instant Number: Sometimes
- Eligible Cards: AAdvantage Platinum Select, Custom Cash, Double Cash, Strata Premier
- How it works: Citi is hit‑or‑miss. If they give you a temporary number on the approval screen, it usually comes with a small temporary credit limit (often $500–$1,000) until the physical card arrives.
Bank of America
- Instant Number: Sometimes
- Eligible Cards: Alaska Airlines, Premium Rewards, Customized Cash
- How it works: More likely if you’re already a BofA customer. If eligible, you can view the card details or add it to Apple Pay/Google Pay from the BofA app shortly after approval.
US Bank
- Instant Number: Sometimes
- Eligible Cards: Altitude Reserve, Altitude Go, US Bank business cards
- How it works: Existing US Bank customers occasionally see a “Virtual Card” option or can add the new card to Apple Pay immediately. Not guaranteed.
Synchrony
- Instant Number: Yes
- Eligible Cards: Retail cards (Amazon Store Card, PayPal, Lowe’s, Sam’s Club, etc.)
- How it works: Synchrony links the credit line directly to your store account upon approval, so you can use it at checkout right away.
Goldman Sachs (Apple Card)
- Instant Number: Yes
- Eligible Cards: Apple Card
- How it works: The card appears in your Apple Wallet instantly. You can tap the card details icon to view the full number for online purchases.
