UPDATE: Chase email communication shared by user in comments.
Chase is actively sending emails to legacy Chase Freedom cardholders, notifying them of a mandatory, automated conversion to the Chase Freedom Unlimited (CFU). This was first reported in this Reddit thread.
If you receive this email, your account will automatically transition on the date specified. Your card number and points balance will remain the same, but your expiration date and CVV will change.
Here is what you lose if you do nothing, and why you can do.
Why This is a Downgrade
Allowing this automated conversion to happen changes your earning structure and limits your future bonus eligibility.
- Loss of 5% Categories: The legacy Freedom earns 5% on rotating quarterly categories. The CFU replaces this with a flat 1.5% on all spend.
- Forfeited Welcome Bonus: You do not receive a Sign-Up Bonus for a forced product change.
- The 24-Month Rule: Chase restricts welcome bonuses on the CFU to once every 24 months, and you cannot apply for one if you already hold it. By letting Chase force this card on you, you lock yourself out of earning a CFU welcome bonus later.
What can you do?
To keep the 5% category, call Chase and ask the representative to product change your legacy Freedom to the Chase Freedom Flex (CFF) instead. By switching to Flex card:
- You keep access to the 5% rotating quarterly categories.
- You gain the CFF’s permanent 3x multipliers on dining and drugstores.
- You avoid holding the CFU, leaving you eligible to apply for its welcome bonus in the future.
Note: Chase allows you to hold multiple Freedom Flex cards. Even if you already have a CFF, you can still product change this legacy card into a second one, effectively doubling your $1,500 quarterly category spending cap.
Please share your thoughts or if you believe there’s a better approach that I missed.
Message says this change will happen towards the end of Nov.
“Your card is being upgraded to Chase Freedom Unlimited. We’re upgrading your Freedom card to Freedom Unlimited Visa Signature to bring you unlimited cash back potential. Your upgrade will happen automatically.
While you will no longer earn 5% cash back in rotating bonus categories each quarter after your upgrade, you will enjoy more ways to earn unlimited cash back on all purchases, with no activation required.
Your upgrade will happen by November 20, 2026. Until then, keep using your old card. Your mobile wallet will update automatically and your new physical card is on the way. Your new card has the same account number as the old one, but your expiration date and CVV may be different. Your current rewards will transfer automatically.”
Thanks for sharing. Will update the post.
Why not apply for Flex now and then request for FU change to Flex? I can see $250 welcome bonus .
Good option if you are under 5/24.
